Keloid in Malaysia: Causes, Medical Treatment & Long-Term Management — with Clinic RX

Keloid overview

Keloids are raised, thickened scars that develop when the skin produces excessive scar tissue during the healing process. Unlike normal scars, keloids can extend beyond the boundaries of the original wound and may continue growing even after the skin has healed.

At Clinic RX, keloid concerns are assessed medically and individually according to the scar's size, thickness, location, symptoms, duration and previous treatment history before a suitable treatment approach is recommended.

Keloid Overview

Keloids develop when the body's natural wound-healing process produces excessive collagen and scar tissue. Instead of gradually flattening like a normal scar, the scar may become thick, firm, raised and extend beyond the original injury.

Keloids commonly affect:

  • Chest and shoulders
  • Jawline and acne-prone areas
  • Ear lobes after piercing
  • Areas affected by previous surgery or injury

Proper assessment is important because keloids may sometimes resemble hypertrophic scars or other raised skin lesions.

Keloids Commonly Affect

Keloids commonly affect ear lobes jawline chest and shoulders
  • Ear lobes after piercing
  • Jawline
  • Chest and shoulders
  • Areas with previous injury, surgery or acne

What Causes Keloids?

Keloids may develop after one or more forms of skin injury or inflammation:

  • Acne or inflamed pimples
  • Ear or body piercings
  • Surgical incisions
  • Cuts and wounds
  • Burns
  • Scratches or repeated skin trauma
  • Tattoos or procedures that injure the skin
  • Genetic predisposition to keloid formation

Because keloid formation is influenced by individual healing response and genetics, not everyone who experiences the same skin injury will develop a keloid.

Types of Keloid & Raised Scars

Different raised scars can behave differently and may require different medical approaches:

Hypertrophic Scars

Hypertrophic Scars

Raised scars that usually remain within the boundaries of the original wound.

Keloid Scars

Keloid Scars

Raised scar tissue that extends beyond the original injury and may continue growing over time.

Recurrent Keloids

Recurrent Keloids

Keloids that grow again after previous treatment and may require ongoing management.

Correct diagnosis is important because hypertrophic scars, keloids and other raised skin lesions may require different treatment approaches.

Why Keloids Persist or Keep Recurring

Keloids can become persistent because:

  • Excess collagen and scar tissue continue to develop
  • The individual has a strong tendency to form keloids
  • The scar develops in a high-tension area such as the chest or shoulders
  • Ongoing acne or inflammation repeatedly irritates the area
  • The scar is repeatedly rubbed, scratched or traumatised
  • Previous treatment did not adequately control scar activity
  • The keloid has previously returned after treatment

Without appropriate medical management, some keloids may remain raised, continue growing or return after previous improvement.

When Keloids Need Medical Treatment

You should consider medical keloid treatment if:

  • The scar continues growing beyond the original wound
  • The scar becomes increasingly thick or raised
  • Persistent itching or irritation develops
  • The area becomes painful or tender
  • The scar is irritated by clothing, jewellery or movement
  • The keloid returns after previous treatment
  • The scar affects movement because of its location or size
  • The appearance of the scar affects confidence

Medical assessment helps determine the type and activity of the scar before an appropriate treatment approach is recommended.

Not all treatments are suitable for every keloid stage or scar type. All recommendations are doctor-led and depend on the scar's size, location, activity, symptoms and previous treatment history.

Keloid Treatment Results: What to Expect

  • Flatter scar appearance
  • Softer scar tissue
  • Reduced scar thickness or prominence
  • Reduced itching or discomfort
  • Improved scar redness or colour in selected cases
  • Better overall scar appearance

Keloid improvement is usually gradual and some scars may require multiple treatment sessions or a combination approach.

Because keloids can recur, treatment aims to improve and control the scar rather than guarantee complete or permanent removal.

Before & After Cases

Results vary based on keloid type, size, location, duration, previous treatment, individual healing response and treatment consistency.
